Gary Neville has explained why he is "stunned" by what Liverpool have achieved this season - and has praised the Anfield hierarchy for the appointment of Arne Slot.

The former Manchester United defender was speaking after the Reds beat Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.

Liverpool claimed a 1-0 win over the Blues at Anfield to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 12 points.

Diogo Jota scored the winning goal, which means the Reds need just a maximum of 13 points to be crowned league champions.

The win for Liverpool came after they lost to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, which was their last match before the international break.

The Reds were also knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain days before the final at Wembley.

Neville has praised Slot's impact at Liverpool since replacing Jurgen Klopp as the club's head coach in the summer.

The Sky Sports pundit went on to explain why the club hierarchy deserves credit for Slot's appointment and why it looks set to be an "unbelievable" season for the Reds.

"I'm stunned at where Liverpool are, I don't think we can rewrite history now and start saying cause they've lost the Carabao Cup final and gone out of Europe that this is a half-disappointing season," said Neville on Sky Sports.

"This is an unbelievable season.

"To take over from Jurgen Klopp, a massive personality and character who was loved beyond words by Liverpool fans, you just thought there was going to be a drop-off, everyone thought there would be a drop-off, I certainly did.

"I just thought there was no way those Liverpool players would be able to react the same to a manager who they had become so accustomed to loving and getting used to. Style of play, the way in which he [Klopp] was.

"Slot, because he's the absolute contradiction of Klopp in terms of his composure, his smoothness, his calmness.

"He just seems to be perfect in terms of what Liverpool needed this season.

"And you've got to give it to everyone who appointed him, but also to the manager and the players."
