Emergency situation due to bears

The government has declared an emergency situation in several districts due to the presence of bears after the death of a 59-year-old man, found on Sunday night (March 30) in the woods near Detva (Banska Bystrica region) with devastating traumatic injuries caused by a bear attack. The government also approved the culling of 350 brown bears based on a report by State Nature Conservation (SOP).

Several organizations criticize the government's decision. According to Greenpeace Slovakia, the Environment Ministry is prioritising killing bears over scientific evidence. Greenpeace states that the ministry is undermining efforts to protect the countryside in Slovakia and threatening the ecological integrity of the broader Carpathian region.
