When Federico Chiesa signed for Liverpool from Juventus for a modest £12.5 million last summer, it appeared to be another transfer masterstroke by the Merseyside club.
The Euro 2020 champion arrived with significant pedigree and expectations.
However, as the 2024/25 season approaches its conclusion, Chiesa’s Liverpool career has stalled dramatically, leading to mounting speculation about an imminent departure.
The Italian international has made just 11 appearances in total – merely three in the Premier League – and has failed to start a single league match under Arne Slot’s management
The 27-year-old’s first full 90 minutes in a Liverpool shirt didn’t come until late January 2025, nearly five months after his arrival, when he featured in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.
Despite Liverpool sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table, Chiesa has remained firmly on the periphery of first-team affairs.
Despite limited opportunities, Chiesa has shown glimpses of the quality that made him one of Europe’s most coveted attackers. In his 387 minutes of action, he has contributed two goals and two assists—a goal contribution every 97 minutes.
It has also been reported this week that the Italy international has been in the best physical shape since his Anfield arrival, with staff noticing how animated and supportive he is from the bench.
But as Chiesa’s frustrations have mounted, so has speculation about his future.
There have been consistent links back to Serie A, with the likes of Lazio and Napoli frequently mentioned.
And now AS Roma and Claudio Ranieri are being named as the next option that Chiesa may have in the summer window.
Claudio Ranieri, who came out of retirement in November to take charge of Roma and stabilize their season, is reportedly eyeing Federico Chiesa as part of a significant summer overhaul.
According to La Repubblica, the former Leicester City manager sees the Italian winger as a key piece in his plans to reshape the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
“Claudio Ranieri’s new idea for the Roma of the future is the return to Italy of Federico Chiesa, as explained by Giulio Cardone during the episode of La Repubblica del Pallone,” it is claimed.
“The former Juventus striker is finding little space at Liverpool, which is why contacts have already been made for a loan at the Giallorossi.”
“A mission that Ranieri has in mind is to regenerate Federico Chiesa.”
“Contacts have already been initiated for the loan of the player from Liverpool to Roma. We will see if it is a negotiation that can develop and in what way.”
