The 2025 NFL Draft is near, and things are starting to get serious. Teams are evaluating prospects every way possible, and constantly assessing their rosters to see which positions need to be addressed during draft weekend. It’s important to gather as much information on prospects as possible, because once the draft starts, anything could happen.
Every year, some players go higher than expected, and others slide. Additionally, there are always some surprising trades either involving players or just picks. That’s why teams must have an extensive board of prospects they like, because aside from the team picking No. 1, it’s unknown who will be available.
While the chaos is a given, the New Orleans Saints will have a chance to do something they’ve never done in a draft before. The Saints currently possess the ninth-overall pick in the first round, and barring a trade out of that spot, New Orleans will select a player at No. 9 for the first time in franchise history.
Saints have never drafted with the ninth-overall pick before
New Orleans isn’t a stranger to picking inside the top 10, drafting 17 different times in the first 10 picks throughout the franchise’s history. However, none of those picks have been at nine. The Saints have drafted first overall just once, at No. 2 twice, and at three just two times as well. The team has never picked at four either, but it did select at five once, and at six twice.
Oddly enough, New Orleans really found a home at No. 7, drafting there five different times. The first time was in 1968, and the last time was in 2008. Speaking of eights, the Saints made two selections at No. 8. Rounding out the top 10, New Orleans selected at 10 twice in its history.
Now, the Saints have the chance to finally pick at No. 9. Of course, that could change if the team wants to trade up or down. If New Orleans does stay put, fourth overall would be the only spot in the top 10 the team hasn’t selected at.
