Newcastle United have tied the defender down to a new one-year contract.

Schar’s current deal was due to expire this summer but talks between the defender’s representatives and the club have been ongoing for a while. An agreement has now been made official.

Next season will be the former Switzerland international’s eighth at St James’ Park. After joining for just £3million from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, he is regarded as one of the Magpies’ best bargains in the Premier League era.

The 33-year-old has gone on to make 221 appearances, over half of which have come since Eddie Howe was appointed as head coach in November 2021. He has scored some iconic goals too, including the strike that wrapped up United’s 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season.

Fabian Schar and Eddie Howe reacts to new deal

Schar said: "I'm buzzing to extend my stay here. It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.

"It's my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I'm really glad to be continuing that. Now it's about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible."

“Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club,” Howe added. “As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group. He has been the heartbeat of the club's season so far, and he'll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible."

Newcastle United still eyeing new centre-back

Newcastle are still targeting a centre-back this summer. Although Schar’s services have been retained, club captain Jamaal Lascelles is out of contract and as it stands is set to leave. The same goes for Lloyd Kelly, whose loan at Juventus is expected to turn permanent for £20million.

Howe’s side tried to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi last summer but refused to meet his £70million asking price. The interest in Guehi remains but other targets are being explored with United last week linked with Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah.

Paul Mitchell, the club's sporting director, said: "We are pleased to extend Fabian's contract. He has played a significant role in the club's growth in recent years and continues to have an important role to play on and off the pitch.

"We take a strategic view on sustaining and building the squad and will continue to work collaboratively to ensure our squad dynamic is optimised for success in the short and long term."
