Free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers was among the main topics among team officials during the recently concluded annual NFL meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.
Rodgers has been linked to multiple teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings. There's also the possibility of him simply hanging his cleats.
The 41-year-old Rodgers reached out to Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell last month and had a serious conversation. Still, nothing is certain, as of the moment.
"He happened to be at a point in time in his career where he was free to have some real dialogue about what his future may look like," said O'Connell in a report from ESPN's Brooke Pryor and Kevin Seifert.
"We happened to be one of those teams that he reached out to, and I have had a personal relationship with him going back since my playing days."
Minnesota already has second-year quarterback JJ McCarthy in the fold. The assumption is he would ascend as the squad's main signal-caller next season after missing his entire rookie season due to a torn right meniscus.
According to Seifert, the Vikings' decision on Rodgers is hinged on a single "scenario" with McCarthy.
"McCarthy would have to demonstrate overwhelming evidence this spring that he will not be ready to play this season, either because of an injury or a complete reversal of the skills and aptitude he demonstrated during his short time in training camp last summer," wrote Seifert.
"Consider Rodgers a break-the-glass option in case of an emergency. Otherwise, the Vikings are committed to their plan of getting McCarthy onto the field for the 2025 season."
Rodgers had a forgettable two-year stint with the New York Jets. The team was riddled with various issues as the four-time MVP struggled to find his form.
Apart from considering Rodgers, Minnesota made contract offers to Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones to shore up its quarterback lineup but they signed with the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts, respectively.
