Man Utd legend honoured with 15ft mural, amid shock support from Man City fans

A new mural has been unveiled to honour Paul Scholes in his hometown of Middleton, commissioned by street artist AkseP19.

Paul Scholes spent his entire career at Manchester United after graduating from the academy.

In September 1994, Scholes made his United debut against Port Vale in the League Cup, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory at Vale Park.

The 50-year-old went on to make 718 appearances and scored 155 goals for United, spending almost two decades at the club.

Scholes won everything during his time at Old Trafford, including 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League triumphs. He also won the FA Cup three times in 1996, 1999 and 2004.

Nowadays, since retiring in 2013, Scholes works as a pundit for TNT Sports and can be regularly heard on The Overlap podcast. The former England international is also the co-owner of Salford City.

Scholes left a mark in football history during his time at United and will be forever remembered as one of the greatest midfielders to have played for the club.

The United legend topped a public poll to decide which local to celebrate.

The mural was designed by street artist Akse P19, who told The Sun that Scholes won the public vote by a “significant margin”.

Interestingly, it wasn’t just United fans who voted for Scholes as Man City fans showed appreciation towards a Manchester icon.

The street artist added: “What’s even more remarkable is that some Man City fans participated in the vote, choosing Scholes, which speaks volumes about the impact he’s had.”

Akse P19 is renowned for his street art as previously seen with his iconic Marcus Rashford mural in Withington, which was unveiled in October 2021.

The United loanee was recognised for his stellar work to help tackle food poverty during the pandemic.

Scholes never liked the spotlight during his playing days, but that doesn’t stop him from appearing on weekly podcasts to air his views on football.

When asked about the depiction on the latest episode of The Overlap’s Fan Debate, Scholes revealed the names of two celebrities he beat in the vote, including renowned actor Steve Coogan.

“Yeah, I wasn’t expecting that,” Scholes said.

“It’s on the side of a chippy in Middleton, where I’m from. I didn’t really know about it, but someone sent me a picture of it on Instagram last week.

“Apparently there was a vote for three or four people from Middleton – [Alan Partridge actor] Steve Coogan, and a swimmer, Keri-Anne Payne, were in there, and I won the vote.”
