Gabriel Magalhaes will miss Arsenal’s Champions League double-header against Real Madrid, and the rest of the season, after the club announced he requires surgery on the hamstring strain he suffered in midweek.
The Brazil international pulled up in the 14th minute of Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Fulham and was immediately replaced by Jakub Kiwior, who stepped in amid the continued absence of Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
In an announcement this afternoon, the official website says, “Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery.
Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season.
Everyone at the club will be fully focused on supporting Gabi to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
Arsenal have had more than their fair share of hamstring issues this season. Both Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka required surgery for serious tears – the former isn’t expected back until pre-season, while the latter spent 101 days out before returning to score the winner against Fulham. Gabriel Martinelli also pulled up in January with a milder version.
So, get well soon Gabi, and we await updates from Mikel Arteta on the potential fitness and availability of Ben White, who missed Tuesday’s game with a knee problem, and Jurrien Timber who also went off against Fulham with a knee issue.
Mikel Arteta will meet the press, ahead of our game against Everton, tomorrow afternoon.
