Newcastle United have followed last night’s 2-1 win over Brentford with a contract renewal on Thursday afternoon.

Before today, we had six out of contract this summer and plenty to sort on that front, but a long-serving Mag has extended his stay on Tyneside today.

That man is Fabian Schar, who sounds delighted to be sticking around and has received plenty of praise from Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell following today’s announcement:

Newcastle United have confirmed that Fabian Schar has signed a new deal at St James’ Park.

The 33-year-old has penned a one-year extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Reacting to the news, Schar said: “I’m buzzing to extend my stay here. It’s been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I’m really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.

“It’s my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I’m really glad to be continuing that. Now it’s about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible.”

Both Eddie Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell have revealed their delight at keeping the Swiss centre-back for another season.

A young, right-sided centre-back is expected to sign this summer, but Mitchell comments on the need to think of the “short and long term” as Schar is likely to offer valuable experience and depth ahead of our return to Europe.

Mitchell said:  “We are pleased to extend Fabian’s contract. He has played a significant role in the club’s growth in recent years and continues to have an important role to play on and off the pitch.

“We take a strategic view on sustaining and building the squad and will continue to work collaboratively to ensure our squad dynamic is optimised for success in the short and long term.”

Howe has also hailed the “outstanding” defender, praising his quality on the pitch and superb attitude off it, describing him as the “heartbeat of the club’s season so far” and key player.

The boss said: “Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club. As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group.

“He has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far, and he’ll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible.”
