Manchester United are reportedly mulling over a surprise move to re-sign 34-year-old Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, David de Gea is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window. So, the Fiorentina shot-stopper has emerged as a target, with the Premier League club ready to re-sign the Spanish international in a Bosman move.
David de Gea and his resurgence
David de Gea has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A since sealing a Bosman move to Fiorentina last summer. The Spaniard went a year without playing any competitive football after leaving Manchester United as a free agent in July 2023. However, he has not missed a step in that time.
The 34-year-old has played his part in Fiorentina dreaming of securing a top-four finish in Serie A this season, with La Viola only five points behind Bologna. The veteran goalkeeper has kept ten clean sheets in 30 appearances across all competitions while conceding only 32 goals thus far this term.
Meanwhile, de Gea’s exploits between the sticks have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. A shock return to Manchester United might be on the cards, with the Premier League club mulling over re-signing the Spanish goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United return on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in David de Gea is perplexing. While Andre Onana has been under fire since arriving at Old Trafford from Inter Milan in a deal worth €50 million in July 2023, he has been one of the rare positives for Manchester United in a dreadful 2024/25 campaign.
Recent reports have linked Onana with a move away from Manchester United. However, a summer departure will be surprising despite his links with Saudi Pro League clubs. Meanwhile, a few Serie A goalkeepers have emerged on the Red Devils’ radar, with Mike Maignan among their targets.
However, re-signing de Gea will be baffling, considering the 34-year-old Spaniard’s advancing age. So, despite his impending free-agent status, Manchester United should not bring him back to Old Trafford and look to the future.
