Buccaneers create breathing space for more additions with no-brainer restructure

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been relatively prudent financially throughout the offseason so far. Those in power gave themselves some extra breathing space on the money front for more moves with a no-brainer contract restructure [before the 2025 NFL Draft](https://thepewterplank.com/buccaneers-nfl-mock-draft-potential-mike-evans-replacement-falls-into-their-lap-01jqp0rfq8my).

Antoine Winfield Jr. is a franchise cornerstone. He was everything the Buccaneers thought and more coming out of Minnesota, firmly establishing himself as one of the league's best safeties through a devastating combination of heavy hitting and exceptional awareness in coverage support.

Tampa Bay rewarded Winfield accordingly. The former second-round pick penned a four-year, $84.1 million extension with a $20 million signing bonus and $45 million guaranteed. This was the least he deserved following a constant stream of exceptional performances and emerging leadership. And the Buccaneers are better off having him around for the foreseeable future.

Winfield will be part of the team's plans for years to come. That gave the Buccaneers enough confidence to restructure the defensive back's deal, giving them some extra cash to spend before the 2025 campaign.

Buccaneers restructure Antoine Winfield Jr.'s deal, saving $15.46 million in 2025

According to [Greg Auman from FOX Sports](https://x.com/gregauman/status/1907570418786967879), the Buccaneers have converted Winfield's $21 million base salary to a minimum salary and bonus. They also added a void year onto his deal, which saves Tampa Bay around $15.46 million in the short term.

Just what the Buccaneers have planned with this new financial windfall is anyone's guess. They had just north of $16 million available before the restructure with only six draft picks to sign right now. That could indicate Tampa Bay is planning to go back into the veteran pool for immediate assistance as they look to retain their stranglehold on the NFC South in 2025.

Winfield wants to win more than anything else. If making a slight tweak to his contract strengthened the Buccaneers' chances of doing just that, he's only too willing to oblige.

He's still getting paid either way. Even if the structure of his payments is a little different.

It'll be interesting to see if this results in a couple more incomings to further strengthen the squad. The Buccaneers could be retaining some cash for more in-season moves, or they could be thinking a little bolder. There's no telling for sure, but having a little extra freedom doesn't hurt.
