As more time passed and more things developed this NFL offseason, it became clear Joe Milton III didn’t have a future with the Patriots.
Milton’s brief New England tenure came to an end Thursday morning when Mike Vrabel and company reportedly traded the sophomore quarterback to the Dallas Cowboys. Shortly after the news broke, FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz added some context to the deal.
“My understanding is the Patriots recently gave QB Joe Milton III permission to seek a trade and the Cowboys were the team that showed the most interest from the start,” Schiltz posted to X. “A deal has been in the works for a number of weeks now, and finally got done early this morning.”
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on March 20 identified the Cowboys as a potential trade suitor for Milton, who boosted his stock with a terrific performance in New England’s 2024 season finale. The Tennessee product will join a Dallas team that was in the market for a new backup quarterback after Cooper Rush left for Baltimore and the Trey Lance experiment failed.
As for the Patriots, ninth-year pro Joshua Dobbs is in line to be Drake Maye’s understudy this season after signing a two-year deal with New England in free agency.
