Arsenal confirm worst possible Gabriel injury news

Arsenal's rotten injury luck is refusing to cease, with Gabriel the latest to succumb to the club's hamstring injury bug.

The Gunners have confirmed on Thursday that the Brazilian international will undergo surgery and thus miss the remainder of the season.

Gabriel returned from international duty early last week after picking up a booking against Colombia which meant he was suspended for Brazil's second game of the month - a 4-1 defeat to Argentina. However, this bit of good news was forgotten 16 minutes into Tuesday's Premier League tussle against Fulham.

The defender was forced off with the most obvious looking hamstring injury, pulling up in defensive transition, and his reaction painted a rather bleak picture. Mikel Arteta confirmed that Gabriel would undergo tests on Wednesday, and we've since received the worst possible news.

Arsenal have already lost Kai Havertz to a season-ending hamstring injury after Bukayo Saka, who returned to action on Tuesday after more than three months out, underwent surgery in December following a tear. Gabriel Martinelli sustained a strain in February, and now Gabriel's caught the hammy bug.

The Gunners have confirmed that the defender will require surgery, which means he's out for the rest of the season.

"Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season," the club wrote.

Gabriel has been immense once again for Arsenal this term, with only David Raya and centre-back partner William Saliba racking up more minutes in all competitions. The Brazilian has once again proven to be a force in the opposition's box, scoring five times, and his threat from set-pieces will be sorely missed, among many other things, during their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Arsenal welcome Carlo Ancelotti's side to the Emirates next Tuesday before travelling to the Spanish capital for the second leg the following Wednesday. In his place, Jakub Kiwior looks likely to start alongside Saliba, but Ben White or Jurrien Timber are alternatives for Mikel Arteta. The former missed Tuesday's win over Fulham with a knee issue.

In addition to the all-important European affair, Gabriel will miss Arsenal's remaining eight Premier League games. In truth, I just want this season to end. Get me to Andrea Berta season.
