Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United (10) celebrates with teammates Lewis Hall (C) and Harvey Barnes (R)
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has dropped an early hint on his team sheet for the clash away to Leicester City.
The trip to the King Power Stadium could see Anthony Gordon available again after his three-match ban ended against Brentford. But Howe may wait before starting Gordon again after making an admission about the form of Harvey Barnes.
Gordon has also been suffering with a thigh injury picked up while starring for England in the World Cup qualifying win over Albania at Wembley. But now as Gordon nears fitness, Howe is close to having a big decision to make as Newcastle look to keep their hopes alive in the Champions League battle.
It is Barnes' understanding with Tino Livramento that has got Howe purring with the duo a key part of Newcastle's Carabao Cup winning adventure last month against Liverpool. Howe said: "Tino has done really well. It was another big game for him against Brentford because he was playing against arguably their most dangerous player. I thought he defended very well.
"Athletically, Tino's excellent and we know that and we've seen that since he's come to the football club, but to have that responsibility of playing left-back on the opposite side to his natural foot and play the way he has – and also build the relationship with Harvey that he has done.
"I think they've played very well together, I thought Harvey was very good again today.
"I just see Tino improving and getting better all the time. We're delighted to have him."
Gordon's return, should his hip injury have cleared up in time by Monday, will be a huge boost for Howe regardless of Barnes' form. The England winger had formed a lethal front three with Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy before his ban.
Newcastle have been short on attacking options in his absence. Joe Willock was pressed into action as a left winger at Wembley and again against Brentford from the bench. On Wednesday night, Barnes switched to the right wing when Murphy was substituted.
Gordon has scored nine times this season in all competitions, with six assists. Barnes has notched five times.
