AMD May Launch RX 9070 GRE for More Affordable Gaming

AMD is reportedly working on another entry in its RX 9000 graphics card lineup to slot between the already-released RX 9070 and the yet-to-be-released RX 9060 XT. The card will be a cut-down version of the 9070, with the same RDNA 4 die but with weaker overall performance. The idea is to introduce a more affordable gaming graphics card and potentially provide more of an analog for Nvidia's RTX 5070, which both of AMD's current RX 9000 GPUs handily beat in both price and performance.

AMD launched the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 in early March after a few months of delays. The wait was worth it, though, as the cards were both powerful enough to compete with the Nvidia options, and more widely available at fairer prices. Sales have been extremely strong, outstripping all previous AMD generations of graphics cards, but stock is still limited. AMD is pushing to get cards back in store, but it's also working on some more affordable ones. That includes the RX 9060 XT and now the alleged RX 9070 GRE.

This latest rumor comes from ITHome (**Warning** We got a warning from our antivirus when visiting), which claims that the Great Radeon Edition of the RX 9070 is designed to be close in performance to the RX 9070 but does so at a lower price point. Since the RX 9070's recommended retail price is $550, the 9070 GRE would presumably be something closer to $499, or maybe even $449.

We don't have any details on specifications as of yet, but we'd expect fewer stream processors and a reduced memory bus width. We might also see less memory overall, potentially making the 9070 GRE a 12GB card. However, AMD is said to have a 16GB version of the RX 9060 XT, so a 16GB GRE version of the 9070 isn't outside the realm of possibility. Indeed, 16GB is being touted as almost the minimum that future graphics cards will need for high-end gaming, so we might start to see AMD push that as more of a baseline in VRAM outside of entry-level cards moving forward.

It's all rumors for now, but the RX 9070 GRE will reportedly launch before the 9060 XT. Considering that card was expected to launch sometime in this half of the year, we'd expect the 9070 GRE to show up for sale before June. Watch this space.`
