The Newcastle United board are set to show further ambition in the wake of the Carabao Cup final win.

It’s believed crowds in the region of 300,000 celebrating the end of our 70-year domestic trophy drought have played a factor as the club consider plans to build a new stadium

Discussions are now underway to go even bigger with the belief we can fill the stadium with thousands more than that due to the demand for tickets.

Newcastle are planning to build the ‘largest stadium they possibly can’ with a capacity close to 70,000 now under consideration, according to Luke Edwards of [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2025/04/03/newcastle-st-james-park-new-stadium-capacity-carabao-cup/).

The original suggestion of 65,000 is now being pushed internally for a larger alternative. Mass crowds gathering to celebrate the EFL Cup win and high demand for tickets has played a factor in the development.

After many years of what ifs, it finally seems as though plans are becoming more and more concrete with regards to the future of where we will play our football.

Although the signs point towards a new ground, which has been described as the preferred option internally, The Telegraph insist that a ‘back up plan to expand and modernise St James’ Park remains on the table.’

Reports indicate that Newcastle are set to leave St. James’ Park, but stay in the city centre location with a switch to the Leazes Park mooted.

Initially it appeared that the Leazes End of St James’ would overlap with the new build. However, that no longer seems to be the case, meaning we will stay at full capacity until the move is completed.

St. James’ will still be the host venue for the 2028 Euros, though it will have some slight changes to meet UEFA criteria it won’t affect fans.

The new stadium is set to take six to seven years to complete once all talks are completed, although a ground that does not overlap St James’ would allow all fans to attend home games as normal until work is complete.
