More Seahawks throwback games? NFL revises uniform, helmet policy

Could we see an extra Seattle Seahawks throwback uniform game starting in 2025?

Maybe not this season, but the possibility exists following the NFL’s decision to revise its uniform policy at the recently completed league meeting in Florida. Gone are the days when you could only wear alternate uniforms—not all alternates are throwbacks, but all throwbacks are alternates—a maximum of three times in a season. It’s time to modernize and increase that number to four!

Here’s what the Denver Broncos President Damani Leech had to say about this news.

“We just refreshed the policy, so now we’ll be able to wear the uniforms four times during the regular season,” Leech said Monday. “That will be great. More opportunity to wear the throwbacks, but also more versatility with the helmets. So, as an example, we can wear our white helmets with orange on orange pants and jerseys. Things like that will just add more flexibility to the closet and hopefully be exciting for the players, but also for the fans.”

Did you catch that on the first reading? “More versatility with the helmets” means that alternate helmets, such as the Seahawks’ silver throwback helmet, can be worn with primary uniform combos.

The Seahawks introduced the 1990s inspired throwbacks to humongous fan approval back in 2023. Seattle won its first game in the throwback threads 24-20 over the Cleveland Browns on a late Jaxon Smith-Njigba touchdown.

Seattle lost 41-35 in a wild Thursday Night Football shootout against the Dallas Cowboys. In 2024, the Seahawks wore the throwbacks on opening day in a 26-20 win over the Broncos, then lost 36-24 on a Thursday night at home to the San Francisco 49ers.

To pour some water on the story as it pertains to next season, it looks like the Seahawks won’t be wearing the throwbacks an additional time.

Per an NFL rule change, teams will be allowed to wear throwback uniforms up to four times per year.

My understanding on #Seahawks for 2025, however, is that they will still wear their royal blues twice.

Keep in mind that the Seahawks also have the Action Green uniforms, which have resulted in nothing but losses since 2021, but it looks like it’s here to stay.

Still... Seahawks throwback helmets with the regular unis? That can happen now!
