The Pittsburgh Steelers and Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have announced a partnership with one another on Thursday.
The teams said the partnership will ‘further both clubs’ efforts’ in the Pittsburgh and Dortmund markets. Through the collaboration, the teams will have joint activities, fan engagement strategies, and content.
The Steelers have never had this type of collaboration with another team from a different sport, but this makes sense. They were granted international marketing rights by the NFL in Germany last year.
The NFL is playing its first game in Berlin this season, but has played in Munich and Frankfurt in the past. They have never played a game in Dortmund or the Ruhr Valley region of Germany, os this could be setting the stage for that.
Borussia Dortmund played a game at Acrisure Stadium in 2018, so they have some history in the region. In addition, the clubs’ similarities mirror each other.
They both wore the same uniform colors, were steelmaking regions, and had winning traditions in their respective sports. That made this partnership a natural marriage. Dortmund hosted Steelers safety Miles Killebrew last month.
