The Dallas Cowboys have acquired New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton and a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a compensatory fifth-round pick.
Dallas issending one of its compensatory picks to New England in the trade, meaning the Patriots will acquire either the 171st pick or the 174th pick in the draft, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Cowboys have needed a backup quarterback since Cooper Rush left for the Baltimore Ravens in free agency, and many expect the team to move on from Trey Lance as well.
Cowboys Chief Operating Officer and Co-owner Stephen Jone previously discussed these departures and said the team was looking to “get a young quarterback in the draft,” as previouslyreported byThe Dallas Express.
Rather than using a draft pick on a player who is a complete unknown, the Cowboys have opted to trade draft compensation in exchange for a young quarterback with one of the strongest arms in the entire NFL.
Although Milton only played in one game in his rookie season, he impressed many across the league, and a trade was widely expected to happen at some point during the offseason.
Milton started in Week 18 for the Patriots against the Buffalo Bills andfinished with 241 passing yards and two total touchdowns while completing 22 of his 29 passing attempts.
The second-year quarterback said he and his family “grew up a Cowboys fan” and are excited about theopportunity to play for the biggest brand in football.
“My mom always had a Cowboys shirt on. She always talked about them. Living in Texas has been a longtime dream of mine. And now I’m with them. I’m ready to work,” he said to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
Dallas will now look to continue adding to the roster during the upcoming NFL Draft, which is scheduled to begin on April 24. The team holds the 12th overall selection in the draft and could look at a variety of different positions with the selection.
