Arsenal have been dealt a massive setback ahead of their [Champions League](https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league) quarter-final clash against [Real Madrid](https://www.managingmadrid.com), as key defender Gabriel Magalhães has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury requiring surgery. The club confirmed the news, stating, “He will immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation program, with the aim of being ready for the start of next season.”
Gabriel’s injury occurred in the 15th minute of Arsenal’s match against Fulham, when he went down without contact and signaled for an immediate substitution. His absence will force manager Mikel Arteta to rely on a center-back pairing of William Saliba and Jakub Kiwior for the crucial upcoming fixtures, including the Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
The loss of Gabriel is particularly damaging given his importance to Arsenal’s backline. He and Saliba have formed one of the most solid defensive partnerships in European football this season, helping the Gunners concede the fewest goals in the Premier League (25).
“I hope he’s okay because he’s possibly been our best player this season and we need him for the big games and occasions,” Declan Rice said in a press conference.
Arsenal now will be hosting Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals without one of their defensive stalwarts.
