Manchester United are seemingly set for a major breakthrough concerning Kobbie Mainoo’s contract situation, with an agreement on personal terms drawing closer.
Kobbie Mainoo’s contract situation at Manchester United has been in the spotlight after reports suggested that the young star was no longer seen as an untouchable player at Old Trafford.
With United strapped for cash, Mainoo has been touted as a high-value player they could look to sell this summer to raise funds for Rúben Amorim. However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been keen to stress that the 19-year-old would not depart for purely financial reasons.
Despite the assurance from the club’s co-owner, there have been repeated reports that United and Mainoo remain far apart in their talks over a new contact.
It has been claimed that, with Mainoo currently earning around £20,000-a-week at Old Trafford, he wants a wage that better reflects his status as an England international and United first-team regular.
If an agreement on personal terms cannot be reached, there is a “genuine chance” Mainoo could leave the club this summer, with United valuing him at around £70 million.
United set for Mainoo contract breakthrough
With the above reports in mind, GiveMeSport have provided the latest surrounding talks between the player’s repesentivies and the club regarding nailing down a new contract.
According to the report, Mainoo is now open to signing a new deal with United, as his priority is now to stay at Old Trafford. This follows a report from The Guardian claiming the teenager would seek a move to Europe this summer.
It is also stated that United are now willing to present an offer in excess of £100,000-a-week to bring him in line with the earnings of star winger Amad and that the final figure would be one they feel reflects his meteoric rise in senior football and will hopefully lead to a breakthrough and agreement.
Provided terms can be agreed upon, Mainoo would like to continue working under Amorim, and United is not considering cashing in on him this summer. This is only likely to happen if talks collapse completely—there is currently no indication on either side of the talks that this is an eventuality.
Both parties are willing to find a solution that satisfies all involved, with there being a strong sense that Mainoo values his homegrown status at United and wants to establish himself as a key figure in the side.
Amorim’s stance on Mainoo is clear
Reports of Mainoo’s potential exit from United broke during the Janury transfer window, with Chelsea seemingly the side who hold the most significant interest in him alongside the potential signing of Alejandro Garnacho.

Around that time, Amorim made his feelings on both Academy graduates clear, explaining that he was looking to keep both players within his squad despite rumours of their exits.
“Yes, my players are always my favourites. So I really love my players, I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones. It’s a special moment in this club, it’s a hard moment, I am really happy with Kobbie, he is improving and also with Garna (Garnacho).
“The first thing I think I don’t remember to say clearly that I want new players. What I said is sometimes the profile for this system is different and the players came here with a different idea how to play.”
He continued: “Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club but we know the position the club is in at the moment. We will see.
“But I’m very happy. I really like the players, especially the guys from the academy.”
