PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting four players for pre-draft visits on Thursday. Running back Kaleb Johnson, wide receiver Matthew Golden, tight end Gavin Bartholomew, and cornerback Azareye’h Thomas are all in the facility for a visit.
Golden, a likely first-round pick, is the first known wide receiver in this tier to come to the Steelers for a visit. The Steelers were at Texas’ pro day and took multiple prospects out to dinner.
Johnson ran just a 4.58 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, but is the most natural zone runner in the NFL Draft. That will make him a favorite of Arthur Smith and the Steelers, and he should have a natural fit in the Steelers’ scheme.
Thomas is a 6-foot-3 cornerback who stood out at the Senior Bowl. A press man coverage cornerback, the Steelers were impressed by what was a standout performance in Mobile, and that has parlayed itself into this visit. Thomas is the first known cornerback to come to Pittsburgh.
Bartholomew does not count against the Steelers’ 30 pre-draft visit because he is a local visit, having played at Pitt. A significant piece for the Panthers over the last four years, the Steelers could still use a depth tight end with the departure of MyCole Pruitt.
