Who will quarterback the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025? All signs continue to point to Aaron Rodgers, especially now that Russell Wilson and Justin Fields have both landed contracts elsewhere.
Yet, it’s not just the quarterback position that some NFL analysts outside of Pittsburgh are starting to question, executives are starting to have doubts about one of the league’s most successful franchises.

If the Pittsburgh Steelers manage to sign Aaron Rodgers, they’ll be looked upon as likely playoff contenders. If they can’t get an upper-echelon quarterback, folks will start to have serious doubts over the franchise’s recent decisions, such as trading a second-round pick for DK Metcalf and then paying him $30 million per season.
Yet, even one anonymous NFL executive who spoke to Mike Sando of The Athletic called the potential Rodgers-Metcalf pairing “odd.” Meanwhile, others can’t help but wonder if the team is starting to make rushed decisions.
“Any time Pittsburgh brings in a receiver, I’m tending to say, ‘OK, they have gotten it right more times than not, so they probably know something I do not know,’” another exec said. “But I question the mix. Are we seeing the first signs of Pittsburgh panic?”

Metcalf has never had a season in which he recorded fewer than 900 yards in a season. If he has a four-time NFL MVP targeting him around 100 times in 2025, Metcalf will have no problems matching and likely exceeding that number again.
While skeptics can form their own opinions, our guess is that the Steelers do not care. As long as Mike Tomlin can lead his team back to the playoffs, the Steelers will have a fighting chance. Except, maybe this time with Rodgers and Metcalf added into the mix, they can actually make a difference when the games really count. x
