Canada's Carney vows to fight US 'unjustified trade actions' in talks with Germany's Scholz

**HAMILTON, Canada**

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday and vowed to push back against the US "unjustified trade actions" against Canada.

Carney reaffirmed his commitment to "protect Canadian workers and businesses and build Canada's economy," according to a statement from his office.

"The two leaders discussed the importance of reliable partners working together to protect transatlantic security and deepen economic ties, particularly in the current global trade context," it said.

Carney and Scholz highlighted the successes of Hannover Messe, the world’s leading industrial technology trade show, for which Canada is set to be the Partner Country in 2025.

They "underscored the close bilateral relationship between Canada and Germany" and agreed to remain in close contact on economic and security matters, it added.

The call came following US President Donald Trump's announcement of tariffs on Wednesday, ranging from 10% to 50% on imports from dozens of countries and economic regions.

The EU will face a 20% tariff, while others will be subject to reciprocal tariffs as follows: China 34%, Vietnam 46%, Taiwan 32%, Japan 24%, India 26%, South Korea 25%, Thailand 36%, Switzerland 31%, Indonesia 32%, Malaysia 24%, Cambodia 49%, Bangladesh 30% and Israel 17%.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned nations against retaliating, warning that any countermeasures could lead to higher US tariff rates.

Canada and Mexico were not subjected to the new tariff regime after facing previous penalties imposed by Trump in a bid to pressure them to take greater action on migration and the flow of illicit fentanyl across the US border.
