Draymond Green showcased his all-around brilliance with a triple-double as the Golden State Warriors secured a crucial 134-125 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
While Steph Curry stole the show with 52 points, Green’s defensive leadership and playmaking were instrumental in lifting the Warriors to the fifth seed in the Western Conference.
Before the game, Memphis Grizzlies interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo spoke highly of Green’s defensive IQ, likening his game awareness to legendary soccer defender Paolo Maldini.
“We’re talking about one of the highest basketball IQ defenders in the history of the game,” Iisalo said. “His ability to put out fires, so to speak, is incredible. His court mapping is so high level, he can see the issues developing, like way earlier than most players. And a lot of times, just by moving into the right position, he can prevent those from even happening.”
Iisalo drew a unique parallel between Green and Maldini, who was known for his ability to neutralize threats before they even developed.
“You know, there used to be a great central defender for the Italian national team in soccer called Paolo Maldini who had very little tackles. And this was considered like that—he’s not a great defender because of this. And his coaches said, yes, there aren't many tackles, because he handles the problems already before they emerge," the Finnish tactician stressed.
“I think Draymond is that type of player, but also his ability to disrupt, come off his own guy when he sees a danger and then create turnovers. He’s a big reason why they lead the league in turnovers forced.”
Continuing his praise, Iisalo highlighted how difficult it is for offenses to prepare against Green’s defensive skill set, pointing out that even elite players like Giannis Antetokounmpo struggle against him.
“Just a complete defender, one of the most versatile defenders in league history, able to defend from one to five, and very difficult to game plan against him offensively.”
