Report: Matheus Cunha is currently dividing opinion at Arsenal for one key reason, amid…

Matheus Cunha could well be heading into his final few months as a Wolves player.

The Brazilian signed a new contract at Molineux a few weeks ago, in what was great news at the time.

But that new deal includes a £62.5 million release clause and realistically, someone is going to trigger it this summer, with Cunha again having shone for Wanderers.

Cunha caused a stir recently by talking up winning trophies and suggesting he’d be moving on this summer.

Some felt it was unnecessary, given Wolves are not yet mathematically safe from relegation.

One club interested in Cunha is Arsenal, and the Gunners are expected to be there for the attacker this summer along with a few others.

But at the moment, there is one thing about Cunha that is dividing opinion within their hierarchy.

One thing will be key if Arsenal decide to push for Wolves star Matheus Cunha

It’s been reported by Give Me Sport that Matheus Cunha is currently dividing opinion within the recruitment team at Arsenal.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

Apparently, their new sporting director Andrea Berta is keen to sign a more ‘traditional’ number nine. Cunha, of course, tends to play from an inside left position at Wolves.

Now, Arsenal are said to want a player for their left side, but want someone with a profile who can offer ‘not only offensive output but a strong defensive work ethic’ as well.

Potentially this may count against Cunha, who is not really known for his defensive work.

It’s stated the key will be if Arsenal’s recruitment team feel Cunha can ‘diversify’ his game.

Arsenal also have reservations about Cunha’s character

It has been reported previously that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta have also had reservations about Cunha’s character.

Cunha has been handed two bans so far this season. The first was for two games, after retrospective punishment from the FA.

And currently, Cunha is serving a four-game ban. He picked up a red card against Bournemouth for fighting with Milos Kerkez, and was then given another game on top of that by the FA for his behaviour straight after.

So it remains to be seen whether Arsenal trigger Cunha’s clause this summer.

Thankfully for Wolves, a lot of other clubs are interested, so there’s a good chance a sale will be made – presuming there is now zero chance of him actually staying.
