Bump: The biggest change we'll see in Seahawks offense

There’s no doubt that the Seattle Seahawks’ offense will look different next season.

A new offensive coordinator. A new quarterback. Two new wide receivers. A to-be-determined new starter at left guard. Those will all be changes evident on the field.

But what will be the biggest difference on offense from 2024 to 2025? Seahawks Radio Network analyst and former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus was posed that question Wednesday during his Four Down Territory segment on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy.

Bumpus expects to see the Seahawks line up under center far more often in new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s scheme.

“Every team doesn’t have to be under center, but when you talk about this philosophy, what they want to do (is) run the football (and) play-action,” Bumpus said. “They have to be under center a bunch.”

The Seahawks were one of the more shotgun-heavy teams in the league last season under former play-caller Ryan Grubb. There wasn’t a lot of play-action, either. Geno Smith ranked 23rd among quarterbacks with 18.1% of his drop backs coming off of play-action in 2024, per Pro Football Focus. Additionally, the Seahawks struggled in the run game and finished 28th with 95.7 yards per game.

Bumpus pointed out that there are examples of teams that excel at running the ball while frequently using shotgun, like Philadelphia, Baltimore and Buffalo. But the play-action aspect is what needs more under-center usage.

“That should be and will be the biggest change we’ll see in this offense, at least visually when you line up,” Bumpus said. “We saw Geno under the center a handful of times. He got his foot stepped on, he stumbled out of there and Grubb was reluctant to run that stuff again or as often. So I think visually before the ball is snapped, that’s going to be the biggest difference.”
