The Las Vegas Raiders traded for quarterback Geno Smith nearly a month ago in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks but the two sides hadn't agreed on a contract extension. While the Raiders announced the trade, Smith has yet to give an introductory press conference.
That was likely due to the lack of a contract. Luckily for both sides, the contract talks are coming to an end. According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, the Raiders have given Smith a two-year contract extension worth $85.5 million a year. The contract will feature $66.5 million in guarantees.
This keeps Smith under Raiders control for at least three years.
At $42.75 million a year, isn't even in the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks on an annual basis. This is a logical contract for the Raiders to give.
Smith is very good but he is in the 10 to 15 range in terms of quarterback rankings. This isn't an overpay. He's making less than Kyler Murray and Kirk Cousins but more than Derek Carr and Sam Darnold.
For Smith, he now has security and a lot of money coming his way for at least the next three seasons. This also gives the Raiders flexibility at the position.
They are only tied to Smith for three seasons so they can either pivot to a younger option in a few years or extend the veteran again if he plays well. If Smith can play at a high level for the next three seasons, he'll be set up for another good payday when he turns 37.
