Merle Frohms has been linked to Real Madrid, according to Sandra Riquelme. Frohms is currently goalkeeper at VfL Wolfsburg, but her departure this summer has been no secret. Real Madrid is looking to strengthen their goalkeeper union. Misa is the first choice at the moment, with little competition – a situation the club wants to change.
Venturing outside of Germany
Merle Frohms is 30 years old and played her entire career in Germany. She began at VfL Wolfsburg in 2012 before moving to SC Freiburg for two seasons, followed by another two seasons at Eintracht Frankfurt, before returning to The Wolves in 2022. Over the years, she has won two Women’s Champions League titles and four Frauen Bundesliga titles.
Frohms recently retired from international football. With the German national team, she finished as runner-up at the EURO 2022 and secured a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Leaving VfL Wolfsburg transfer free
Frohms’ departure from VfL Wolfsburg has been confirmed to multiple media outlets, meaning she will be available on a free transfer. The goalkeeper would add a ton of experience to Real Madrid squad and be a great addition to their goalkeeper department.
Before the Real Madrid rumors, Sport Bild reported that the goalkeeper was set to join an English club, though they did not specify which one. One thing is for sure, she is leaving VfL Wolfsburg. Since she made her wishes clear to the club, her role changed significantly. Borbe has become the preferred goalkeeper, starting the Women’s Champions League matches as well as Frauen Bundesliga games.
At Real Madrid, Frohms would have to compete with Misa for the starting spot. Misa’s future with the club was in the air for a while but eventually she signed a new deal until 2026, which was one of Alberto Toril’s top priorities at the time.
