**Last week it felt like we were nearing the final stages of the decision-making process as Newcastle United look to make the call on expanding St James' Park or building a new stadium.**
Newcastle's COO showed a video presentation to the board which gave an insight into where the new stadium would be built and what the 65,000 capacity ground would look like.
After that, it was expected that we'd soon be seeing these details released officially by the club with a chance for fans to give their thoughts ahead of the final decision being made.
However, now [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2025/04/03/newcastle-st-james-park-new-stadium-capacity-carabao-cup/) are suggesting that after seeing around 300,000 people take to the streets on Saturday for the Carabao Cup celebrations, the feeling among the board has shifted.

Newcastle are now contemplating going as big as possible with the new stadium
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparently, there's now talk of trying to build the biggest stadium they can on the space available to them which could see the reported 65,000 capacity increase to 70,000.
The original 65,000 was chosen as it was seen as the perfect size in terms of being a big stadium but also guaranteeing the capacity is maxed out every week.
Fans would argue that they could build a 100,000-capacity ground and still fill it for every game, and there is definitely truth to that right now, but we all know how fans can be fickle and if Newcastle's form dips, many of those who are happy to ride the crest of a wave may not turn up when things aren't going their way.
The report just tells us that the club is miles away from making the call
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Telegraph's Luke Edwards and The Daily Mail's Craig Hope can't seem to agree on what's going on which just tells us that nobody outside of those boardroom walls actually knows what it happening.
All this latest report has really told us is that we're still some way away from being told anything concrete.
We came into this year expecting to be told by the end of the first quarter what was going on, but that has now been pushed back to the end of the season, and it feels like the club is going to use every single day available to them before making the decision.
