Commanders React To Defensive Leader’s Return

Bobby Wagner has been known as one of the best linebackers in the sport throughout his 13-year NFL career.

While most 34-year-old linebackers aren't usually guaranteed a spot on an incoming roster, the Washington Commanders made an exception for their captain last season.

And it's hard to argue against it.

Returning for a 14th season in the NFL, Wagner is looking to build off a successful first season in Washington while recording over 120 tackles and recording two sacks. Rejoining with his former defensive coordinator in Dan Quinn, it appeared the former Seattle Seahawk franchise great had found the fountain of youth throughout the 2024 season.

And his leadership is a big reason for his return to the nation's capital.

"He's the first one in-he and Jayden-to the building every morning," Quinn said. "But I think that shows over and over again, like how committed he is, and other people see that.

"The impact that Bobby made on and off the field was excellent. I can still remember we were in a tough stretch, and he was the one that stood up in front of the team, and I think that was something then that showed the leader that he is because he is soft-spoken, he's got really high standards."

Washington's defense is getting younger by the offseason move. With the loss of Jonathan Allen this offseason, it's not really outlandish to see why the Commanders would want to bring Wagner back.

Even if it means trusting a soon-to-be 35-year-old to stay healthy for a full season.
