Newcastle United are looking to add to their defensive options this summer after being linked with Liverpool star Jarell Quansah.

The 22-year-old was a target for the Tyneside club last season when Liverpool worked on a deal to sign Anthony Gordon.

The Times reported on 26 March Quansah has now re-emerged on Newcastle’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with Eddie Howe’s side believing a £30million bid plus add-ons could tempt the Merseysiders into a sale.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider someone must have leaked the north-east giants’ interest in the centre-back after the “strange” reports have emerged.

Football Insider revealed on 1 April Liverpool don’t want to lose Quansah after he’s featured heavily in their first team this season.

The defender, who was named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad last month but is yet to make his international debut, has made 22 appearances for Arne Slot’s side across the 2024-25 campaign.

Newcastle swap deal unlikely after Jarell Quansah update

Borson insisted Quansah is unlikely to be involved in any swap deal for Isak this summer.

He told Football Insider: “We always have loads of talk about player swaps and they very rarely happen.

“I don’t know, it seems an odd link. It hardly seems a groundbreaking player to be talking about in March, so somebody’s leaked it for some reason.

“I mean, £30million seems like a pretty low fee. I don’t know how good he is. It seems odd.

“Liverpool presumably would not want to lose him if he was decent quality, especially not for £30million, so you’d sort of ask why Newcastle wanted him on that basis.

“Liverpool are unlikely to not have seen enough of him or not to understand his quality. Of course, he was in the England squad, so I don’t know what the story is there.

“It seems a bit of a strange one. I still think you’d probably assume he’s not going to go. Liverpool are going to lose a defender in Alexander-Arnold. Can they really lose a number of defenders? I don’t know. It seems unlikely.

“But I’d be really sceptical about all the talk about Isak. It’s very hard to see how anybody can afford to buy Isak from Newcastle.

“I’m not saying people won’t try, but it just looks like a very expensive deal and a deal that Newcastle will only do if the money is really very significant.”

Newcastle and Man United race to sign Hugo Ekitike

Football Insider revealed on 27 March Newcastle are racing Manchester United to sign Hugo Ekitike in the summer transfer window.

Howe’s side are long-term admirers of the 22-year-old after missing out on a deal for the forward when he joined PSG in 2022.

Ekitike has registered 19 goals and eight assists in 39 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt this season.
