Newcastle United’s talks over a new contract for Alexander Isak have stalled amid ongoing rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the striker’s agent has been planting stories in the media.

Newcastle are reluctant to sell the 25-year-old this summer and he is not likely to push for a move away, but talks may be paused to let speculation die down.

Brown told Football Insider in March that Newcastle want Isak to sign a new deal and are doing everything they can with talks ongoing behind the scenes.

However, he explained it is difficult to entertain negotiations amid constant speculation.

Football Insider revealed on 16 February Isak is seen as the “perfect” signing by Liverpool manager Arne Slot and the recruitment team at Anfield.

Newcastle respond to Liverpool interest in Alexander Isak

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Liverpool are planting stories about signing Isak to stir up interest in the move.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the whispers about a potential move away from St James’ Park aren’t going away.

“*It’s always difficult to negotiate while there’s so much talk about a move,*” he told Football Insider.

“I’ve seen it before at clubs where players walk in and the rest of the players are joking ‘where are you going today then?’ – with all these moves being talked about.

“His agent has obviously been putting his name out there with a possible payday in mind.

“The whispers about a move to Liverpool don’t seem to be going away either.

“Isak could join any club he wanted in world football, he’s that good, but they have to be prepared to meet his asking price.

“He’s not going to push for a move away from Newcastle, he won’t agitate for a move.

“Newcastle have just won a trophy, the fans love him, they’ll be playing in Europe next season and the club want to match his ambitions.

“But it is hard to ignore when it’s constantly being mentioned, and then it becomes difficult to sit down and discuss terms over a new deal.

“So I think those talks might be delayed until things start to die down a bit.

*“I don’t think he’s had his head turned or anything, and Newcastle of course aren’t interested in selling their best players, but it’s a case of wait and see.*“

Jarell Quansah update emerges as Liverpool stance revealed

Newcastle and Liverpool have been at the centre of constant speculation surrounding Isak’s future, but it is a move in the other direction which has made recent headlines.

Football Insider revealed on 1 April that Newcastle want to sign Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, but the Reds are reluctant to lose him this summer.

However, Liverpool are planning to sign a new centre-back this summer amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Virgil van Dijk, who is out of contract in June.

Following that, Brown told Football Insider on 2 April that Quansah wants to join Newcastle as he is keen to play more regular first-team football at the top level.
