West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez is a serious summer transfer target for Borussia Dortmund, according to the Mexican newspaper El Universal.
Ordinarily, I wouldn’t pay too much attention to speculation like this — but the fact it’s come from Álvarez’s local media may be a strong indicator. It was indeed the same publication that first broke the news of Ligue 1 club Monaco’s interest in Álvarez previously, so they have a good track record of getting things right.
Claret & Hugh were able to confirm Monaco’s interest through our top source at West Ham — but it’s worth noting that, as of now, there has been no official approach for Álvarez… yet.

The Mexican midfielder has been something of a bit-part player this season and was dropped from the starting line-up for the Hammers’ 1-0 defeat against Wolves on Tuesday. Álvarez, more than anyone else, has been hampered by West Ham’s decision to recall James Ward-Prowse in January. However, he did replace JWP at Molineux — and was a big improvement.
Irons manager Graham Potter is looking to overhaul his midfield this summer, and if he can recoup anything close to the £33m West Ham paid Ajax for Álvarez, he may well be tempted to cash in.
Monaco are believed to retain an interest in the midfielder.
