In short:

Kolkata Knight Riders posted an 80-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens.

Pat Cummins returned the bowling figures of 1-44 and made 14 with the bat.

Travis Head was dismissed for 4 on the second ball of his innings.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins admits his team has not made the ideal start to its Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign following a third straight defeat.

Hyderabad slumped to a 1-3 win-loss record after Kolkata Knight Riders recorded an 80-run victory at Eden Gardens.

Kolkata, the reigning IPL champion, made 6-200 with the bat, before dismissing Hyderabad for 120 in the 17th over.

"Not a great night," Cummins said after the match.

"You've got to be realistic. It's three games in a row it hasn't come off for us but it was only a couple of weeks ago we got 280-odd.

"Our batters are at our best taking it on, but you have to think about if you could take different options.

"We won't dwell on it too long. It's a long tournament, not the ideal start, but we've still got plenty of time to catch up."

Having elected to field after winning the toss, it all started well enough for Cummins when he had Quinton de Kock caught in the deep in his first over for 1.

De Kock's opening partner Sunil Narine was then captured at the other end by Mohammed Shami for 7.

The Sunrisers looked capable of restricting the home side to a manageable total — despite a fine 50 off 32 balls from Angkrish Raghuvanshi — as Kolkata could only get to 4-122 off 15 overs.

But Cummins and the Hyderabad bowling attack faded, leaking 78 runs off the last five overs.

Venkatesh Iyer made 60 off 29 deliveries, enabling Kolkata to post a formidable victory target.

Cummins finished with the figures of 1-44.

His Australian teammate Travis Head began Hyderabad's run chase with a four on the first ball, but was dismissed the following delivery by Vaibhav Arora.

Cummins made 14, while Heinrich Klaasen was the top scorer with 33.

Varun Chakravarthy (3-22) and Arora (3-29) were the most productive of Kolkata's bowlers.

The defeat has Hyderabad in last position on the IPL standings, with Kolkata sitting in fifth place behind leaders Punjab Kings.
