Defender highlights key difference as Aston Villa target Premier League top five

Unai Emery’s men face what the defender described as another “huge” game when they host Nottingham Forest on Saturday, aiming to extend their winning run to seven matches in all competitions.

Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Brighton put Villa firmly back in the race for a Champions League spot with Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Donyell Malen, all signed during the last transfer window, scoring in the second half.

And Konsa reckons they could not be in better shape as they continue to fight on three fronts over the final two months of the campaign.

Villa finished fourth last season but struggled over the final weeks and were knocked out of the Europa Conference League in the semi-finals.

Konsa said: “When you have players to come on like Marco Asensio, Donyell Malen and Ollie Watkins, you can see there is a big difference.

“Last season I thought we lacked squad depth and we were fatigued toward the end of the season. The boys who came on Wednesday night won us the game and credit to the boss with his changes.”

He continued: “It gives us a huge lift. When players are fatigued and you look at the side and see who is coming on it is a massive boost for us.

“It gives us players on the pitch extra confidence to get the ball up to them. Everyone can see the quality they have, with the goals they scored on Wednesday night. I am really pleased for them all.”

Villa, who face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and will also play Crystal Palace in an FA Cup semi-final at the end of the month, are aiming to secure European qualification for the third straight year.

Konsa believes the experience of previous years will help during a battle which promises to go to the wire, with the table still very tight.

“Of course it helps,” he said. “Most of the boys were here when the boss first came and we know what it takes.

“The first season the boss was here, we finished really strong and that is what we will try and do again.

“We obviously want to play Champions League football again. That is the goal for us. We know what is ahead of us.

“We know we have eight games remaining in the Premier League and we are going to try and get as many points as we can to finish in the top five. We will take it game by game and now focus on Saturday, which is another huge one for us.

“Nottingham Forest are doing really well. But we will focus on ourselves going into the game to get three points again.”
