GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is alerting consumers to potential scam risks ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.
According to the DATCP, popular events can increase the risk of identity theft.
Thieves will try to get your personal information in different ways, like online surveys, quizzes, and prize giveaways that are not associated with official draft events.
The DATCP administrator for the division of trade and consumer protection says to be cautious of anyone asking for sensitive information.
“They’ll be seeking people’s personally identifiable information like their name, contact information, maybe a credit card number for a prize giveaway or even more personally identifiable information like a date of birth or a social security number,” says Michelle Reinen.
The DATCP also recommends checking with official event sources and using the NFL One Pass app when registering for events related to the draft.
Scammers are also finding discreet ways to steal your credit and debit card information.
They use devices called “card skimmers” which can be secretly installed on atm’s and retail checkouts. These devices record card information during transactions, and sometimes a fake keypad is added to capture your PIN.
While the DATCP recommends making purchases with credit cards because they offer built-in protections against fraud, consumers should still keep an eye out for faulty payment readers.
“Be sure that it’s a secure payment area where there isn’t any wiggle room on the device, where really that would just be something laid over the payment device that skimmer is trying to gather all of that personally identifiable information off of your credit card,” says Reinen.
