Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca believes Moises Caicedo showcased why he is in the conversation for best defensive midfielder in the world with “another great performance” in the win over Tottenham.

Caicedo started and played the full 90 minutes as the Blues claimed all three points - and bragging rights - against their London rivals for a second time this season.

In fact, it was the Ecuador international’s midfield partner, Enzo Fernandez who scored the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge when he headed home Cole Palmer’s cross early in the second half.

Caicedo thought he had doubled Chelsea’s lead soon after with a sweetly struck volley, but the goal was ruled out following a lengthy VAR check as Levi Colwill was deemed to have been in an offside position when the initial free-kick was taken.

Caicedo was also involved in the second disallowed goal on the night as he was fouled by Pape Matar Sarr prior to the Spurs midfielder finding the back of the net with an effort from range.

Still, the hosts ran out 1-0 winners and when speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, Maresca heaped praise on Caicedo especially after the midfielder overcame an injury scare early on to help Chelsea secure a valuable win.

"In this moment I think he is one of the best or the best defensive midfielders in the world. He is doing fantastic.

"The best thing about Moi is that everyday he is working serious, he is very humble, very kind, he is polite, he is a fantastic guy and I feel today was another great performance.

"Also I think we had more players like Trevoh Chalobah who had a fantastic game, overall I think the team was good."

Caicedo has now gone three Premier League games in a row without receiving a booking. Should he escape punishment against Brentford and Ipswich he will avoid having to serve a two-match suspension for 10 yellow cards.
