When a new front office takes over, there usually is a decent bit of turnover on the roster that takes place as they begin to shape their vision for the organization. With Scott Perry replacing Monte McNair as general manager of the Sacramento Kings this offseason, don’t be surprised to see a busy offseason.
And those rumors are already starting to flow out from the NBA Draft Lottery, an event where plenty of leaguewide executives find themselves in the same city. According to Jake Fischer, “there (has) been no shortage of rumbles, since the hiring of Scott Perry as general manager, that Sacramento is expected to gauge the trade market for veteran swingman DeMar DeRozan.”
Fischer reported this on his Substack.

DeRozan, who just wrapped up his 16th NBA season, was acquired by former GM McNair in a sign-and-trade last offseason that sent out Harrison Barnes, Chris Duarte, and a 2031 first-round pick swap. The swap is owned by the San Antonio Spurs, who were the third team in the deal.
Just one year later, and under new management, the expected future Hall of Famer may be on his way out of California’s capital. In 77 games played with the Kings, the 35-year-old averaged 22.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds on 47.7 percent from the field and 32.8 percent on threes.
The year didn’t end up looking anything like what DeRozan must’ve expected when he agreed to the sign-and-trade. Head coach Mike Brown was fired mid-season, something the veteran had never experienced in his career.
That led to De’Aaron Fox, who DeRozan claimed was big in recruiting him to the Kings, being traded to the Spurs midseason. The deal did bring in Zach LaVine, who DeRozan played with for three seasons in Chicago, but that pairing experienced little success during their Bulls’ tenure.
Perry emphasized the importance of creating a defensive orientation and fully retaining their roster from last season wasn’t going to accomplish that. DeRozan, who has two years left on his contract — with the final season only partially guaranteed — should have some value leaguewide. But to what extent?
If the Kings were willing to add draft capital, DeRozan’s salary could get them into some interesting conversations as they try and rework this roster that still lacks a true point guard.

The 2025 NBA Draft didn’t do the Sacramento Kings any favors on Monday night, as the team remained in the 13th spot. It was their highest possibility of outcomes.
Due to their previous Kevin Huerter trade with the Hawks, the pick will be conveyed to Atlanta. It removes new general manager Scott Perry from any current first-round draft capital this season but frees up their future assets that were included in the protections — including their own 2026 first-round pick.
