Report: Time running out for Newcastle United as defender enters advanced transfer talks

Newcastle United appreciate the importance of the free agent market.

They utilised it last summer, with Lloyd Kelly joining Newcastle United on a free transfer from Bournemouth.

While that deal did not totally go to plan, it has helped the Magpies. Kelly’s £15million transfer to Juventus is now official, handing Eddie Howe’s side a major PSR boost.

This summer, Newcastle have looked at Jonathan David. He is set to be available on a free transfer, but the Magpies look destined to miss out.

Elsewhere, Newcastle have been offered Jonathan Tah.

The 29-year-old has announced that he is leaving Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer, with the Magpies one of multiple clubs that have been given the chance to strike a deal.

Jonathan Tah transfer update

However, all roads appear to lead towards the Magpies missing out on Tah.

Bayern Munich are targeting Tah, with Vincent Kompany’s side stepping up their attempt to land the Germany international.

According to the Athletic, Bayern Munich are now in advanced talks with Tah.

They report that he will sign a three-year deal with the Bundesliga champions if he decides to move to the Allianz Arena.

What Paul Mitchell intends to do at Newcastle United this summer

With Bayern entering advanced talks with the centre-back, Newcastle United are running out of time to negotiate a deal of their own.

Although Newcastle do want a centre-back and Tah is a top tier talent, a move to Tyneside has never felt likely.

Paul Mitchell wants a younger Newcastle United squad.

The Toon sporting director has a mission to lower the average age at St James’ Park, which is why the club will be trying to sign players who are aged 25 or under.

In terms of centre-back targets, Newcastle are interested in Marc Guehi. He is 24-years-old, while his experience with Crystal Palace means that he is in a great position to have an instant impact on Tyneside.

As well as Tah’s age, Newcastle are not going to be able to compete with Bayern Munich when it comes to the player’s wage demands.

That is also something that the Magpies must consider with new arrivals, as they continue to try and stay on the right side of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
