Cody Gakpo says defender Man City sold for £16m actually has a better left foot than Mo Salah

Mohamed Salah has been the best player in the Premier League this season.

The Egyptian star fired Liverpool to the title with the winger producing 28 goals and 18 assists across 36 games in the English top flight. The majority of these came with the winger’s left foot, and for many, the Reds superstar has the best in the Premier League.

Omar Marmoush plays alongside Salah with Egypt, and the Man City star would be best placed to pick between the left foot of the Liverpool star and his teammate Erling Haaland, while players such as Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka would also come into the conversation.

For Cody Gakpo, Salah does not have the best left foot he has seen, and instead, the Dutch star named a player Man City sold for just £16m.

Cody Gakpo picks Angelino over Mohamed Salah

Angelino came through Man City’s youth system and made the majority of his appearances for the Manchester club between 2019 and 2021, before being sold to RB Leipzig for £16m.

The Spaniard would play for PSV Eindhoven before rejoining Man City in 2019, and it was there where he impressed Gakpo, as the Liverpool star told Pro Direct Soccer’s TikTok account that the full-back has the best left foot he has ever seen.

“I will go with Angelino, I played with him at PSV. Incredible left foot,” Gakpo stated. “I also played with Mohamed Ihattaren, a Dutch player, very good left foot as well.

“Noni Madueke, top left foot, and everybody who is in my team now, very good technique as well, so it’s difficult to choose.”

Angelino accused Pep Guardiola of killing his confidence while at Man City, and their relationship was likely the reason for his departure in 2021.

The Spaniard would only play 15 times for City before that, as it was clear that the legendary coach was not fully convinced about the full-back while he was at the Etihad Stadium.

Comparing Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah

When it comes to left-footed players in the Premier League at present, Haaland and Salah are seen as the two best, with both having very different playing styles.

Salah thinks Haaland has it easier as a striker; however, that has not stopped the Egyptian from outscoring the Norwegian superstar this summer, although the 24-year-old has suffered with injuries and a big dip in form

Over the two seasons prior, there is a strong case to be made for Haaland being the better player of the two, as the Norwegian fired Man City to several titles, especially during the treble-winning campaign in 2023, where the striker produced incredible numbers.

With Salah to remain at Liverpool for two more years, the battle between the two lefties will resume, and after an underwhelming campaign for Haaland this season, the 24-year-old will be looking to respond and take back his crown as the Premier League’s best goalscorer.
