Everton have announced that Goodison Park will become the permanent home of the club’s women’s side.
With the men’s team due to start playing in the club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, the future of the historic Goodison Park was up in the air.
However, the club are set to transform English football’s first purpose-built ground, designed by Archibald Leitch, into what the club is calling ‘the most iconic venue in the Barclays Women’s Super League’.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper is currently living across the road from the new stadium in the Liverpool docks but will now get the chance to play at Goodison Park.
She joked last year that “It’s right outside my apartment, so I see it being built every day, which is funny. The parking is going to be a nightmare!”
The WSL side currently play their games in Walton Hall Park, a venue that has a capacity less than 2,500.
Brosnan is contracted with the Toffees till May 2026, while her Ireland teammate Heather Payne has her contract up at the end of this season.
Speaking about the move to 39,000 capacity venue, Megan Finnigan the Everton skipper said: “This move is a testament to where the women’s game is right now and, more importantly, where it is heading. Goodison is a magical stadium with a deep heritage and close ties to the local community.
"Leading the team out for that first home match of next season will be nothing short of a career highlight – and the prospect of what Everton Women can become with such an iconic ground to call our home is hugely exciting.”
Angus Kinnear, CEO of Everton, said: “We know how treasured Goodison is, not only to every Evertonian, but to the game itself, and being able to keep such an iconic stadium at the heart of the legacy project is something that has been incredibly important to us.
