Nick Cox breaks silence as Adam Lawrence leaves Manchester United under-18 lead coach role

Manchester United announced that Adam Lawrence had left his role as the under-18s lead coach after the campaign’s conclusion.

Following two marvellous seasons leading the under-18s, Adam Lawrence has stepped away from his role as lead coach.

In his first season, Lawrence led Manchester United to an incredible under-18 treble, winning the U18 Premier League North, National League, and the U18 Premier League Cup.

The 2024/25 season was not laden with silverware, but Lawrence still lost just once in 24 league games, only missing out by two points while also reaching the FA Youth Cup semi-final.

Beyond the success of his teams, Lawrence has been praised for his impact by Chido Obi and Harry Amass, and he has played a pivotal role in the development of some of the most exciting talents currently at the club.

It is a massive loss for the academy and leaves United needing to find a replacement to become the lead coach of the under-18s. Perhaps under-15 lead coach Paul McShane will be an option, considering the success he led the under-15s to this season.

Nick Cox reacts to Adam Lawrence leaving Manchester United

Following the announcement of Lawrence’s exit, United’s director of the academy, Nick Cox, has spoken out about the impact of the 39-year-old, as quoted by club media.

“Adam has contributed greatly to our club throughout his four years at Manchester United. His passion for helping young players to maximise their potential has played an important role in the success of our Academy system.

“We take great pride in supporting and witnessing the development of our staff. Adam is a fine example of that, moving up from the Under-16s to the Under-18s, enjoying success and now being ready to seek a new challenge in the game.

“The whole of the Academy thanks Adam for his service and wishes him the very best of luck for the future.”

Cox will now play a role in finding the perfect coach to take Lawrence’s place in the United academy.

What Adam Lawrence said about leaving Manchester United

Cox was not alone in speaking out about the exit of the brilliant coach, as Lawrence himself also commented on his departure from the club.

“It has been a privilege to work for Manchester United. It has been a very special few years with this group; I’ve been fortunate to work with many of this season’s Under-18s right through from the Under-16s level and witness their growth as people as well as players.

“During the last two years, all the staff across the Professional Development Phase can be very proud of the work we have done to support the players. The style of play, the focus on individual development, and the culture of the Academy that we have supported; it has been a real privilege to play my part in helping the group.

“I’m now ready for the next challenge, but I’ll always cherish the memories made at this great club and can’t wait to see what the future holds for the players I’ve had the pleasure of working with.”

Lawrence will surely be set to find himself a senior management role, challenging himself at the next level.
