One former Liverpool striker has had to be placed in an induced coma after a nasty injury and surgery.

The Reds have managed their squad better than some of their rivals this season, leading to fewer serious injuries and player absences this season.

While they lost the likes of Alisson, Diogo Jota, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Federico Chiesa, Trent Alexander-Arnold and even Ibrahima Konate and Harvey Elliott to varying injuries at different periods this season, the bulk of the first team stars have remained fit.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai have featured heavily for Arne Slot’s men this season, without spending much time on the sidelines through fitness concerns.

The ability of the Liverpool coaching staff to keep the players fit has been a huge part of the reason the Reds are the champions this season.

However, one former Liverpool man has had a bit of rotten luck with injuries this season.

Former Red and current Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been in and out of the treatment room this season.

The Nigerian played a huge role in Forest’s survival last season. But he has seen less game time this season, mainly due to Chris Wood’s form and his own niggling injury issues.

His rotten run of luck continued on Sunday as he suffered a severe abdominal injury after crashing into a post during Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester.

Despite receiving extensive on-field treatment and briefly continuing play following Sunday’s collision with the post, Awoniyi visibly struggled before being substituted in stoppage time.

Nottingham Forest confirmed that the 27-year-old has undergone “urgent” abdominal surgery on Tuesday.

However, the Daily Mail has now provided further updates on Awoniyi, claiming that the Nigerian, who spent six years on Liverpool’s books without making a first-team appearance, has been placed in an induced coma after the surgery.

“Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma and receiving intensive care following ‘urgent’ surgery on a serious abdominal injury that Mail Sport can reveal could have been life-threatening,” the report said.

Thankfully, the report also revealed that “the initial signs are that the surgery has been a success.”
