The Boston Celtics have announced that star Jayson Tatum suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon in the Celtics’ 121-113 playoff loss to the New York Knicks on Monday.
Tatum already underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday, and he is expected to make a full recovery. There is no timetable for his return.
Tatum averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 36.4 minutes per game during the regular season over 72 appearances. In eight playoff appearances this season, he was averaging 28.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 40.3 minutes per game. Tatum scored 42 points in Monday’s game before exiting with 2:58 remaining due to the injury.
The Celtics find themselves down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series with the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Now they’ll have to try to fight back without their star forward.
The series continues Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Pacific in Boston.
