Celtics star has surgery for ruptured Achilles tendon, out indefinitely

Things just went from bad to worse for the Boston Celtics.

Already down 3-1 in their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series to the New York Knicks, [Boston announced](https://x.com/celtics/status/1922392634842321375) it will be without star Jayson Tatum for the foreseeable future on Tuesday.

The Celtics said the 6-time All-Star underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon on Tuesday.

No timetable is available for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Tatum, 27, had to be carried off the Madison Square Garden court late in the fourth quarter [after suffering a noncontact lower leg injury](https://x.com/DrJesseMorse/status/1922112270626066579/video/1) in the Celtics’ 121-113 loss on Monday. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday.

Before the injury, the ex-Duke star had scored 42 points on 16-for-28 shooting. He had averaged 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists during the postseason.

Boston, the defending NBA champions, will try and hold off elimination without Tatum in Game 5 in Boston on Wednesday.
