Everton are set to play their final ever game at Goodison Park as they take on Southampton, and they could plan something spectacular.

Goodison Park has been the iconic home of the Toffees for over 100 years, and fans will pay an emotional farewell on Sunday as they prepare to move stadiums.

Everton will still keep their old stadium for the women’s team to repurpose and use, but this is unlikely to detract from the occasion ahead of what could be a special atmosphere.

Merseyside is famous for The Beatles in addition to football, and one famous member of the band could make an appearance for the farewell to Goodison.

Rumours have emerged that Sir Paul McCartney, one of the two surviving members of the Beatles, could appear and even perform at Goodison Park as Everton bids farewell to the stadium against Southampton.

Andy Dunn has now assessed the likelihood of McCartney performing in a huge planned farewell party as Everton look to end on a high note at their stadium on Sunday.

“For a good while now, there has been a rumour on Merseyside that Sir Paul McCartney will be part of a Goodison Park encore,” he wrote in the Daily Mirror (14 May, page 56).

“It is unlikely, but it would be nice, one Merseyside institution saying farewell to another.”

McCartney supports both Everton and Liverpool

The Beatles are often associated with Liverpool, but McCartney grew up as an Everton fan and was even in attendance at the 1968 FA Cup final between Everton and West Brom.

However, he did since admit that he admires both Liverpool and Everton, even though he has a preference for the Blues.

A lot of the family members of the other Beatles have season tickets at Liverpool, and aside from McCartney, there is little connection to Everton with the rest of the band and their legacy.

However, if the 82-year-old was to perform at Goodison’s farewell, it would be a special moment for the musician as well as the fans in attendance, as they prepare for a game which will be etched into their memories for years to come.
