Manchester United are facing a summer transfer window with limited funds but could be handed a financial boost thanks to a sell-on clause

Manchester United are one week away from the biggest game of their season as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.

The Red Devils qualified for the final in convincing fashion with a 7-1 aggregate victory over Athletic Club, as they denied the Spanish side the chance to contest a European final inside their home stadium.

Tottenham also made it through their semi-final without any major drama as they beat Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 5-1 over two legs. Both Spurs and United are languishing in the bottom third of the Premier League but for one of the clubs, winning the Europa League will rescue their season and have a significant impact on the next 12 months.

For the Red Devils, they are in a position where they can only sign one or two players without any sales. However, that would change if they won the Europa League because of the revenue boost associated with playing in the Champions League, along with the prize money for winning the tournament.

Mason Greenwood linked with Premier League return

Another way for United to make money this summer is if former player Mason Greenwood leaves Marseille. The United academy graduate left for Ligue 1 last summer for a fee around £26m. He had spent the season before that on loan in La Liga with Getafe.

Now talkSPORT has reported that two unnamed Premier League clubs are interested in signing Greenwood this summer. The 23-year-old is said to be ‘unsettled’ in France despite scoring 19 goals in 34 games.

When selling Greenwood to Marseille, United negotiated a 50 per cent sell-on clause in any profit that would be made if the Ligue 1 club sold the forward. Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid have been linked with the player, with figures of between £50m and £60m suggested. United stand to make millions if Greenwood is sold for around that price this summer, although 10 per cent of whatever money they get must be paid for Getafe, also.

Mason Greenwood Manchester United return highly unlikely

Greenwood left United on loan in the summer of 2023 before his permanent exit almost 12 months ago. It came after Greenwood was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour after an investigation started in January 2022. However, the charges were dropped in February 2023. Greenwood always denied the charges against him.

United conducted their own investigation and concluded in August 2023: “Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.”

It added: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

The player came through United’s academy but a return to Old Trafford is highly unlikely as the club have already pointed to the “difficulties” with Greenwood pulling on a Red Devils shirt again. However, he could come up against his former club if either of the unnamed Premier League clubs step up their interest.
