Ryan Giggs has suggested Ruben Amorim demanded attention from the club's board when he said his Manchester United are "maybe" the worst side in the club's history.

United have endured an abysmal Premier League season and winning the Europa League against Tottenham Hotspur at the Estadio de San Mamés is the only way to salvage 2024/2025.

Amorim has spoken honestly about his players since his appointment in November and he made headlines in January when he said his team are "maybe" the worst in the club's history.

United are guaranteed to record their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League this season. They suffered a 17th defeat of the campaign to West Ham last weekend and will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before they prepare to take on Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Giggs recently spoke to Webby & O’Neill and he discussed Amorim's controversial comment.

"I think first of all, he's sort of dampening expectations and maybe talking to the powers above to say I need backing and this team needs improving," explained Giggs. "I don't think anyone can say this United are the worst, me or you, because we've not seen every United team.

"I think we've fallen from the recent levels of history and success, fallen a long way. He's been truthful when he has come to the club, and he's probably not expected it to be so bad.

"So he's been very open and some people have found it refreshing, some people have had different views, but yeah. It was a surprising quote, but I think it was speaking to the powers above."

After his arrival from Sporting Lisbon, Amorim immediately implemented a different system. The formation heavily relies on wing-backs and doesn't accommodate traditional wingers.

Giggs said: "I'm biased, I'm a winger and a massive part of this club's history is wingers. This system that Ruben is determined to keep doesn't really cater to that. You can obviously play a winger in one of the wing-back positions and maybe a more defensive-minded person on the opposite flank.

"You're not going to see loads of wingers in this system, but I think where we are now, the club have brought in a coach who has a certain philosophy, a certain system and his own principles.

"Now you have to back him and give him the players that he needs in that system. They are specialised positions and whether we can get those players is another story."

About the Europa League final, Giggs added: "In the last few years, we have shown we can win cups, and we have become a sort of cup final team, so it was never out of the picture.

"And when you marry it with our Premier League form, then probably not [expect to make the final in Bilbao], but our form in Europe has been good, and it's just a massive contrast."
