Liverpool have now held talks with “probably the best midfielder in the world” – report

Liverpool are said to have held talks with Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz over a move to Anfield this summer, according to a fresh claim.

New transfer rumours continue to emerge regarding the Reds, as a busy summer in the market gradually approaches.

Liverpool are being linked with players all over the pitch, as Arne Slot looks to make his Premier League champions even more formidable when they defend their trophy next season.

According to Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger (KSTA), the Reds have held talks with Leverkusen attacker Wirtz over a hugely exciting move to the club, amid plenty of interest in the Germany international.

The 22-year-old’s representatives have reportedly spoken to four big European clubs, one of whom is Liverpool, with the Bundesliga side growing agitated by Bayern Munich’s attempts to sign him.

A sensational summer option for Liverpool

Wirtz is a special young player who could have an enormous future in the game, having already achieved so much in his career, not least winning the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen last season.

The German has scored 57 goals and registered 65 assists in 196 appearances for his current side, which is an impressive return, and former striker Patrick Helmes has paid him huge praise, saying:

“I was in the stadium for the Champions League match against Salzburg. What Florian Wirtz can do is absolutely exceptional for me. Probably the best midfielder in the world. I think that Wirtz has something different that Jamal Musiala isn’t quite ready for yet. I think Wirtz will simply move on in the summer. He has left huge shoes to fill in Leverkusen. With the way he plays football, he is an absolute hero there, the best player in the squad.”

There are no negatives to Liverpool signing Wirtz, even though he clearly wouldn’t be cheap – a £100m price tag has been placed on his shoulders in some reports – and he is a world-class player who can excel out wide and centrally.

Whether the Reds are willing to spend so big on one player remains to be seen, though, and there is big competition for his signature, but he could be a superstar at Anfield.
